Gallery Thumbnails: Edited Thumbs saved, but do not display correctly.

  • I have several images that I am trying to reformat so that faces are not breaking the top plane of the thumbnail perimeter. I was able to resize and crop and save, and I went so far as to re-insert them into the gallery.

They display properly within the media library list view, and within the Gallery page in the admin, but they do not display properly.

I have also tried to go into the theme settings and UNcheck the Images/”WP Resize Cropping: The post thumbnail will be cropped to match the target aspect ratio.” box.

This has to be a javascript error, I am certainly cropping these appropriately, saving the image, and updating the page as well. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance!

And on a whim, I created a new page, and set up a new gallery once all images had updated thumbnail images: no luck.

    Any advice would be fantastic.

    Hi Jeff,

    Thanks for writing.

The thumbnails for the gallery templates are sized: 375x250px

There’s no relation with JavaScript, it is only that the thumbnail images for the gallery are re-sized and cropped. If you have a photo in which you have a face on the top edge of the photo it is quite likely that the thumbnail will cut off that. But it will happen when resizing to any size.

    Juan.

    Hi there,

Still dealing with this, I’ve let it go but recently updated a few items and am still unable to generate a custom thumbnail.

Is it possible to set thumbnails for the fancybox gallery to display images as preferred, without cropping heads off? These appear at 193 x 128 pixels when you go to the webpage featuring the gallery. Here is the page in question: http://dreamcafeandgrille.com/food-pics/guests/

I am able to edit and generate thumbs by going through Media/Edit/Edit Image. There, I am able to use the crop tool, while setting the Thumbnail Settings to “Apply changes to:
 Thumbnail”

I can save and update, and have the Regenerate Thumbnails plugin. I can see my changes in the “
Current thumbnail” display.

I’ve tried cropping to both aspect ratios, and a variety of sizes. Any advice would be appreciated, I would love to avoid cropping Spike Lee’s head!

    Best,
    Jeff

One other thing, I’ve just noticed that the captions in the gallery could be easily edited in the page view, but they don’t seem to appear in the modal window that displays the image, rather, the file name appears.

    Hi,

Thanks for the follow up. I hope you are doing well.

The thumbnails for the gallery images are resized to 375×250 pixels, this means that if you have faces in the full size image, the best way to maintain them inside of the thumbnail would be creating pictures which maintain the aspect ratio.

For example, 750×500 pixels would be a good size to have the images, it is the double of the thumbnail size. By having them in this dimensions, when resized by the script, they will maintain what you want to display in them (in your case, faces).

Another option would be deselecting the cropping functionality within the “Images” section of the “Theme Options” panel. This might affect the rest of the images across the site.

With regards to the captions, the gallery template actually displays the file title. That’s a design decision, because of a limitation regarding space. Captions can be really large.

    Best,
    Juan.

Thank you for the very quick reply. I thought that this might be the case and set up a test page with images that are cropped to the 6×4 aspect ratio, but I was hoping that using the cropping tool within the edit mode might be the way to get around this.

It would be great if it did, allowing content from any source- including instagram and a square format to work. Otherwise, I wonder what the point is for using it?

    Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the follow up. No, the images are automatically cropped in the gallery template.

With regards to the cropping tool, it is part of the WordPress medialibrary and it has nothing to do with the theme itself. Probably you can modify your images there, without using any other graphic editor tool. I think that is the intention.

I forgot to remember, but perhaps you’d like to try the WordPress gallery functionality. This functionality works without using the gallery template. Maybe using the default functionality solves your problem. It doesn’t come with effects and it opens every picture in a new tab, but I think it doesn’t crop the pictures.

    Best,
    Juan.

Thanks, Juan, appreciate the reply. I’ll use the images I’ve cropped to the 6×4 aspect ratio.

    Thanks Jeff.

    Have a nice day,
    Juan.
