Multiple food menus

  • I really am new to WordPress and I’m struggling to work this out.
Can I have a navigation at the top of the page like in the demo (food menu) then also another one that links to another food menu but has different content? i.e one which shows an evening menu and one which shows a daytime menu.
Also, when I have a play around with the widgets, not many actually seem to appear on the pages. Are they not compatible with the template?
I’m creating all this locally on my Mac so don’t have an online WordPress user account set up at the moment.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hey Andy,

Thanks for writing and welcome to the WordPress world! I hope everything is going fine.

The best solution for this would be creating two parent Food categories. That would be “Daytime″ & “Evening″. For each one of those you can create subcategories like starters, main and dessert. Then you add the food items assigning them to the specific food category you wish.

Since “Daytime″ & “Evening″ are food categories you don’t need to create any pages for them, they’re created automatically by the theme.

If you visit your page http://yourwpsite.com/wp-admin/edit-tags.php?taxonomy=menu-category&post_type=menu – you’ll see all the menu categories that you’d created. You’ll able to create more, edit or delete. When you hover any category you’ll see that there’s a link that says “View”. If you click that link, you’ll be sent to the Food menu category template.

Over the theme options, you can select to display your food menu category template with a grid or list style.

Then, when creating your WordPress navigation menu (check Appearance > Menus ), you can add any “Menu Category” (in your case: “Daytime″ and “Evening″).

The theme is compatible with widgets, you just need to set the widgets in the proper “widgetized space”.

    Best,
    Juan.

    Hello,
I’m still struggling here – I’m happy that I’ve created the two parent Food Categories.
I’ve called one: A la Carte and the other one Lunch Menu. I’ve also added sub categories to these, starters mains etc and then added food item within each of these. My problem now is getting these to show on in the navigation.
(checked Appearance > Menus ) then can’t get it to work.
Everything is blank here on this page – do I ‘Create Menu’?
I thought I would of needed to go to (pages > add new) using the menu template – however this adds both menu categories to this page (Al a Carte and Lunch on the same page)
    Hope this makes sense?

Also am I able to add a third menu category for drinks/wine or am I limited to 2?

    Thank you in advance

    Regards
    Andy

    Hello Andy,

Thank you for the follow up.

Regarding the navigation menu, it is fairly simple to create and configure them. Actually it is part of WordPress, and we’ve created an article on how to manage them, which can be viewed here: http://nicethemes.com/article/setting-navigation-menu/

If you don’t get to see the “Menu Categories” when creating/editing a navigation menu, please check the “Screen Options” button on the right top part of the screen and ensure that the “Menu Categories” option is ticked.

You are able to add as many menu categories as you need.

    Best,
    Juan.

    Hello Juan,

Going back to your original reply where you say about creating two parent Food categories – am I right in saying thats using ‘Food Menu’ in the sidebar: Food Menu > Menu Categories
I created a new Menu Category called A la Carte then sub menu’s under this (starters etc.)
Then ALL food/drink items added are under Food Menu > Food Menu
Would a screenshot help to see what I’ve done and if so how would I get this to you?

I just can’t seem to get the ‘A la Carte’ and ‘Lunch’ Menu’s as a title on the navigation page.

    Thanks
    Andy

Here is a link to the screenshots to show what I’ve done.

    Hello,

    Thanks for the follow up.

Yes, if you check my last message, there I explain how you can get to see the “Menu Categories” for your navigation menu:

When creating the navigation menu, please check the “Screen Options” button on the right top part of the screen and ensure that the “Menu Categories” option is ticked. Once you tick that option you’ll see the “Menu Categories” on the left part of the screen.

    Best,
    Juan.

    Hello,
Yes, thank you – it’s taken a while to sink in, but I have managed to do this now.
The only thing I can’t see is where you make these list view or grid view. Also, am I able to set the order that the sub categories appear, or are they set to alphabetical.
    Regards
    Andy

    Hello Andy,

    Thanks for the follow up.

The list or grid view can be chosen from the theme options panel, over the “General Settings” section.

With regards to ordering the categories, at the moment, WordPress doesn’t give such option. However, there are several plugins that let you set an order on categories and taxonomies. For example: http://wordpress.org/plugins/taxonomy-terms-order/

We’ve tested that plugin, it is free, and it works perfectly well for what you need.

    Best,
    Juan.
